the mountain

You and I

My god, you and I.

We moved mountains for each other

Climbed and fell together

Only to reach the horizon and watch the earth’s beauty unfold before us

You were my earth and I was your whole, entire world

And the beauty that unfolded were three words each day

Words spoken so truthfully, so delicately and soft

That they are what kept the earth alive

Watered the trees and softened the meadows

And allowed the mountain to look so unimaginably beautiful when we were atop

But the mountain…

It all came crumbling down

And we were still on top when it fell

You to one side and me the other

The rocks crashed upon us and it hurt like hell

I climbed and tried to move the rubble to reach the top

To find you

But I could not climb the mountain without you

I couldn’t
